Impotence – The Facts and Myths

It is a misconception that only older men suffer from impotence. In fact, impotence can affect anyone who has reached sexual maturity. Male impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction, is a condition where the man is unable to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient to have a satisfactory sex.

There are actually many causes that can lead to impotence in young men, although the number of young men that are affected by this condition is questionable. This is due to the fact that young men who suffer from impotence are embarrassed and do not dare to talk about it compared to older men.

The causes of impotence in young men

Most young men suffer from impotence due to psychological causes. The condition is often temporary, occurring in situations that are too stressful. Anxiety is a major cause of impotence in young men and can arise for many reasons, including:

• Fear of making the partner pregnant
• Fear of a sexually transmitted disease
• Inexperience
• Negative experiences of sex in the past
• The size of the penis
• Being too eager to complete the sexual act

When a young man is anxious about sex, it may be unable to achieve or maintain an erection for satisfactory sexual intercourse. This condition may be temporary and can improve gradually. Yet it is a fairly common problem in a man. Male impotence is not a disease. There are treatments for impotence in the market such as impotence pills - Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. However, you should only use such drugs after you consult a doctor.

Facts and myths about male impotence

Fact: The male impotence is not a disease.

It can be caused due to some physical disorders such as diabetes and low blood pressure. Other psychological causes such as stress and trauma can also lead to impotence in men.

Myth: Erectile dysfunction in men is inevitable with age.
It is not necessary. Although the level of sexual stimulation changes with age in men, it does not mean all men eventually become impotent. Older men may need more time to become excited or they may need more physical stimulation. They also have a higher risk of health problems like hypertension and diabetes that can cause erectile dysfunction.

Fact: Smoking causes male impotence.
Unfortunately, this is not a myth. Medical research has proven that smoking causes male impotence by reducing blood flow to the penis. Nicotine, the chemical in tobacco, restricts blood flow to the penis by blocking arteries. Apart from the obstruction of the arteries, nicotine also alters the valve mechanisms which store the blood in the penis to maintain an erection.

Myth: If prescription drugs are not effective in some men, there is no other choice.
There are other methods currently available in the market to treat male impotence. These methods are safe and effective, but should only be used after consulting a doctor.

Myth: Young men do not suffer from impotence.
This is completely false. In fact, one in ten men over 21 suffer from erectile dysfunction. The reasons are psychological rather than physical causes in this case.
